Are you interested in taking part in one of the longest running and most prestigious quiz shows ever shown on television? Do you want to represent Edinburgh Napier University at a national level? Could you test your general knowledge against other universities from across the country? Then apply to take part in University Challenge!

What is University Challenge?

University Challenge is a televised quiz competition for teams of students that is produced for BBC2. It is one of the oldest programmes still airing on UK television and has been on screens since 1962. Each series is a single tournament, consisting of 6 rounds of head-to-head matches, with 28 teams from different universities taking part. Gameplay involves teams answering challenging questions, with the aim of winning their team ten points. Previous episodes of the programme can be found here.

Who can take part?

To make up a team, we need 5 Edinburgh Napier University students - 4 main team members (with 1 nominated as captain) and a reserve player, who would be able to step in to replace a main team member if they became unavailable at any point during the recording process.

What does taking part involve?

This year's series will be filmed at MediaCityUK in Salford over 3 recording blocks:

  • 25 Feb 2025 to 28 Feb 2025 (Round 1)
  • 25 Mar 2025 to 27 Mar 2025 (Round 2)
  • 23 Apr 2025 to 25 Apr 2025 (Quarterfinals, Semi-Finals, Final).

All team members (including the reserve) must be able to potentially attend all filming dates above. Filming takes place largely during the working day, and it takes around 3 hours to prepare and film an episode. In the later stages of the competition, teams may be required to film more than 1 episode a day, and potentially on multiple days back-to-back.  You would be able to claim back reasonable travel and food expenses, and the BBC will arrange and pay for hotel accommodation for the recordings if you need it.

How can I apply?

In order to apply, you must complete the online application form by Thursday 14 November at 12pm.

Following your completion of this application form, you will be invited to attend an in-person session that will assess your quizzing skills under pressure. This will take place on Tuesday 19 November, 12:30pm to 3pm. If successful, and a team can be assembled, then further meetings as well as the official application by 29 November to the show will follow.
